Chapter Ten
4th of November
Elizabeth had the satisfaction of receiving a prompt reply from her much-loved aunt Gardiner. She was no sooner in possession of her letter than she hurried off into the little copse where she was least likely to be interrupted. Sitting down on her favorite bench, she prepared to be happy.
My dearest Lizzy,
Where to begin? I am gladdened to know the Meyersons have arrived safely to Meryton and that they were able to convey our good wishes, along with our wedding gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Meyerson are well known and much admired here in Cheapside. They will be missed! I wonder what Caroline Bingley would think if she knew we not only conducted business but also socialized with the Jewish families that live with us here in the East End? I fear the Bingley sisters think poorly of us and our connections with trade, but we live in so different a part of town, all our connections are so different from theirs and, you well know, we go out but a little.
Now Lizzy, do not fear. Although your news is rather startling, I pray all will be well! Your dear papa must have had good reason to abandon hearth and home at such a time. You must have faith, dearest, and if the wedding is postponed, we shall have the added pleasure of spending a few more days together while we wait for his safe return. Think upon it! Mr. Darcy will be that much keener when he finally beholds his bride. I will be exceedingly pleased myself to see you and Jane wed, my dear. I took no pleasure in witnessing Lydiaâs vows to Mr. Wickham. Pray, how are your sister and brother-in-law? Have you had any word from that quarter?
Be of good cheer, dear Lizzy. Your happy day is nigh!
